Former Australian Open finalist Marin Cilic has dropped out of the first Grand Slam of the year due to a knee injury.

He announced his withdrawal via Twitter.

“Not a great start to 2023 and few tough days in Melbourne,” he wrote.

“Devastated I cant play this year at the Australian Open but health comes first. See you next year Melbourne!”

He had started his season in India at the Maharashtra Open but had to withdraw before his quarterfinals match because of a knee injury, thus giving Tallon Griekspoor the walkover.

He had sustained his knee injury in training.

The 34-year-old came in second back in 2018, losing to Roger Federer in the finals.

Since his second-place finish, Cilic has not made it past the fourth round of the Australian Open.

Last year, he made it to the semifinals of the French Open. He does have one Grand Slam title to his name, the 2014 US Open.

He is currently ranked No.18 in the world and he has 20 tour-level titles.
