Switzerland Wins Billie Jean King Cup

The Swiss team faced and defeated the Australian Team to win the Billie Jean King Cup Final in Glasgow on Sunday.

This win, which comes two months after the retirement of a Swiss tennis hero, Roger Federer, has given the Swiss tennis fans something to celebrate.

This was the team’s third appearance in the Final and their first fin. Last year, they lost to Team Russia, and back in 2019, they also fell to the Martina Hingis-led team.

The Swiss team this time was led by Belinda Bencic. In her interview, she said: “What happened last year gave us extra motivation.”

“We were so heartbroken, I don’t think I have ever cried so much.”

“Afterwards Jil said we would win it next year and we have. I’m so incredibly proud.”

The Swiss team did well and they did not lose a single ‘live match’.

“It was a great battle,” Jil Teichmann said on court.

“Storm is playing very good the whole week, I was expecting a big fight. So here I was, getting the fight, and I’m super happy I got the point.”

“We didn’t win this just today; it was this week, it was actually over years, we tried to get better and better at it,” said team captain Heinz Günthardt. “You saw how many close points there were; who knows why we win some and lose some. A lot of it has to do with heart, and this team has a lot of heart.”As for Australia, it was their 10th Final appearance. They have not won the event since 1974.

“I am extremely proud of my team,” said Australia captain Alicia Molik. “It was a phenomenal effort all week from the Aussies. We gave it everything.”

“But credit to the Swiss team – it was flawless tennis from Belinda.”
