She made the announcement via Twitter where she wrote:
“I really wanted to play the US Open, but eventually I decided that two against one just isn’t a fair competition.”
It was followed by emojis that included a baby bottle.
Kerber, who is ranked 52nd in the world, has not competed since July 1 when she lost in the third round of Wimbledon. Back in 2016, she won the womens singles title at Flushing Meadows. She rose to No.1 in the world soon after and held that spot for 20 weeks straight.
Two years later, she won Wimbledon. She and Serena Williams are the only two active players who have won three different Grand Slam tournaments. Earlier this year, she won her 14th WTA Career title at the Internationaux de Strasbourg.
For the next months, I will take a break from traveling the globe as a tennis player but then again, I believe its for the best possible reason, Kerber wrote Wednesday.
“I will miss all of you. She also said: Being a professional athlete means everything to me but I’m grateful for the new path I’m heading to. To be honest, I’m nervous and excited at the same time.”
The US Open is set to start on August 29 and will be played through to September 12. The qualifying rounds have already begun.
Players who are expected to play in the tournaments main draw include Serena Williams, Emma Raducanu, Elena Rybakina, Iga Swiatek, Coco Gauff, and more.
