She was initially in the lineup that included Rafael Nadal, John McEnroe, Carlos Alcaraz, Coco Gauff, and Iga Swiatek. It was to coincide with the Independence Day celebrations in Ukraine.
However, Azarenka’s presence was met with protest from a number of Ukrainian players.
Belarus is a Russian ally and back in June, the All-England Club event went as far as banning both Russian and Belarusian players from Wimbledon in solidarity with Ukraine.
Players from these countries have been allowed to play by the USTA but they have to compete under a neutral flag.
24 hours, after careful consideration and dialogue with all parties involved, Victoria Azarenka will not be participating in our ‘Tennis Plays for Peace Exhibition’ this evening,” said the USTA in a statement.
“Vika is a strong player leader and we appreciate her willingness to participate.”
“Given the sensitivities to Ukrainian players, and the ongoing conflict, we believe this is the right course of action for us.”
Earlier in the week, Ukrainian player Marta Kostyuk announced that she had turned down the chance to play at the exhibition because of Azarenka’s presence.
“When we found out that there would be representatives of Russia or Belarus at this event, I immediately said that I will not participate in this,” said Kostyuk.
The exhibition is expected to raise US$2 million for Ukraine. Also playing in the event are Stefanos Tsitsipas, Matteo Berrettini, Maria Sakkari, Leylah Fernandez, Dayana Yastremska, Katarina Zavatska and Daria Snigur.
