Fucsovics Joins Rublev in Rotterdam Final

Marton Fucsovics upset Borna Coric to reach his maiden ATP 500 final.

Fucsovics advanced to the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament final stunning the Croatian player in straight sets 6-4, 6-1, in under 90 minutes.

The 29-year-old has made a nearly perfect campaign in Rotterdam, starting by overcoming Frenchmen Arthur Rinderknech 6-2, 6-4 and Pierre-Hugues Herbert 6-4, 6-3 in the qualifying series.

The world No. 59 battled hard to defeat Reilly Opelka, 7-6(2), 6(4)-7, 7-6(4).

Playing for a spot in the last eight, he outlasted Alejandro Davidovich Fokina 6-3, 6-2, to then edge Tommy Paul 6-2, 6-3, securing his ticket into the last four in Rotterdam Ahoy.

Continuing his exceptional pace, Fucsovics moved past Coric to face world No. 8 Andrey Rublev on Sunday.

THE FIRST FINALIST IN ROTTERDAM

Rublev made a solid start as he led by an early break at 3-2, taking the opener set 6-3, breaking Tsitsipas serve twice.

In the second set, the 23-year-old sealed victory over the Greek player 7-6 (2), reaching his first final in Rotterdam - his fourth ATP 500 final in a row.

Throughout the match, Rublev converted seven aces, recording 50 service points won.

Following Saturday triumph, the Russian continues his remarkable winning streak - the 19th straight ATP 500 match.

The Moscow native advanced en route to the final in Rotterdam, first moving past American player Marcos Giron 7-6 (1), 6-3, to then defeat 2009 champion Andy Murray 7-5, 6-2.

On Friday, he outlasted French qualifier Jeremy Chardy 7-6 (2), 6(2)-7, 6-4, and on Saturday, Tsitsipas lost to the Russian star.

“This was a tough tournament for me because I had to give lots of energy, both in singles and doubles. Rublev played incredibly well with his great forehand. I will now try to recover for the tournament in Marseille next week”, said the Greek player.

ROTTERDAM’S SURPRISE?

Fucsovics has an ATP Tour title under his belt, the Geneva Open he won back in 2018, playing against no other than local hero Stanislas Wawrinka.

In 2021, the Hungarian player met former world No. 3 at the Australian Open displaying high-level tennis in an epic clash, contested in five thrilling sets 7-5, 6-1, 4-6, 2-6, 7-6 (9), and four hours.

The former would then move to the third round of the first Grand Slam of the season.

RANKING UPDATE

Daniil Medvedev is confirmed to become the new world No. 2 in the ATP Rankings on 15 March.

Medvedev will be the 1st player in the Top 2 since 25 July 2005, other than the big four, Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, and Murray.

Tsitsipas will reach a new career-high becoming world No. 5.
