The origins of LDU Quito date back to 1918 when local athletes began forming semi-professional sports teams. The club was officially founded on January 11, 1930, as "Universitario" at the Central University of Ecuador. Over the decades, LDU has made its mark by dominating the Pichincha provincial league, where it claimed nine titles, six of which were earned in the professional era. The club’s successes transitioned smoothly into the national league, with LDU Quito securing 11 national championships, ranking them fourth overall in Ecuadorian soccer history. Their latest national title came in 2018.

They also won the Recopa Sudamericana in both 2009 and 2010. Remarkably, LDU is one of only six clubs globally, alongside giants like Boca Juniors and River Plate, to achieve the coveted CONMEBOL treble by winning all three continental tournaments. This feat was accomplished consecutively from 2008 to 2010, earning them recognition as the best South American team for two years straight.
