Initially, the team grappled with its identity, considering names like Unión and Juventud before ultimately being influenced by local governance to become known as Club Municipal de Deportes. The official formation of Millonarios took place on June 18, 1946, led by the visionary Alfonso Senior Quevedo, who became the club's first chairman.

Since its founding, Millonarios has established itself as a powerhouse in Colombian soccer. The club holds a record of 15 league titles, making it one of the most successful teams in the country. It was also a pioneer on the international stage, becoming the third Colombian club to secure a major international trophy with the Copa Merconorte in 2001. As of 2017, they added to their extensive trophy cabinet, underscoring their consistent performance in domestic tournaments.
