Associação Chapecoense de Futebol, widely known as Chapecoense or Verdao, is a Brazilian soccer club located in the city of Chapecó, Santa Catarina. Founded in 1973, the club has a rich history, marked by resilience and a passionate fanbase, and competes in the Copa do Brasil.

History

Chapecoense made a significant mark on Brazilian football by clinching its first state championship, the Campeonato Catarinense, in 1977. Over the years, the club has secured a total of six state titles, with the latest victory occurring in 2017. Although Chapecoense first entered Brazil’s top division, Série A, in 1978, they only returned to the top flight in 2014 after a long absence. The club also has a notable presence in futsal, having won the state championship twice.

Tragedy struck on November 28, 2016, when a charter flight carrying the team crashed while en route to the first leg of the 2016 Copa Sudamericana final against Atlético Nacional in Colombia. The crash claimed the lives of 71 out of 77 passengers, leaving only six survivors, three of whom were players. In a remarkable display of sportsmanship, Atlético Nacional requested that the trophy be awarded to Chapecoense, a gesture recognized by CONMEBOL, who granted the title to Chapecoense on December 5, 2016.

Stadium

Chapecoense plays its home games at the Arena Condá, a stadium that reflects the club’s spirit and passion. With a capacity to hold around 22,000 fans, the arena becomes a fortress for the team, where supporters come together to cheer for the Verdao. The atmosphere during match days is electric, embodying the heart and soul of the local community.

Honours

Throughout its history, Chapecoense has achieved various accolades, most notably its six state championships. The award of the Copa Sudamericana title post-tragedy stands as a testament to the club's enduring legacy and the solidarity of the footballing community. As Chapecoense continues to grow and evolve, the club remains a symbol of hope and determination in Brazilian soccer.
