The Mali national football team is nicknamed as Les Aigles (The Eagles) and is controlled by the Federation Malienne de Football. This national team of Mali has never qualified for the World Cup finals.

The team reached the African Nations Cup finals in 1972, losing to Congo by 3-2. They however failed to qualify for the finals till 1994, when they reached the semi finals. In 2000, they played their first World cup qualifier and five year later, in 2005, they lost a World Cup qualifier to Togo with 2-1 loss on a last minute goal. Due to this, there were riots in Bamako.

In 2010 African Nations Cup, the team made football headlines when they won with 4-0 against Angola, and this was known as one of the best comebacks in recent history of Mali football.

Major Achievements

The team was thrice champions of the Amilcar Cabral Cup (1989, 1997 and 2007). They were the runner up of this title for four times.
