The team is controlled by the Slovak football association, which was founded in 1993 after the dissolution of Czechoslovakia. This association has been affiliated to both UEFA and FIFA since 1993. They were also the participants at the World Cup in 2010 for the first time since independence and even made till round 16 after defeating Italy, the reigning World Champions. However, Slovakia lost to 2-1 to the Netherlands.
The head coach of this team is Vladimír Weiss with the assistant coach being Michal Hipp. The captain of this team is Marek Hamsik. Most of the caps have been acquired by Miroslav Karhan, with 96 appearances and Robert Bittek made the maximum goals of 23.
The first official match of this team was played in Bratislava against Germany in 1939 which ended with a victory of 2-0 for Slovakia. Post Second World War, this team was counted into the team of Czechoslovakia, but for the next fifty years, the team didn’t play any matches as an independent country.
Slovakia’s first official international match was after they regained independence in 1994 with a victory of 1-0 against the United Arab Emirates in Dubai. Later on, on Slovak soil, this team lost to Croatia with 4-1 in Bratislava. The team suffered their biggest loss the following year whilst playing against Argentina with 6-0.
Tehelne pole, which means brick field is the main football stadium situated in Bratislava. This stadium is the home ground for Slovan and the Slovakia national football team. The total capacity of the stadium is around 30,000 spectators.
=== Major Achievements ===
Till date, their highest achievement was in 2004 against Liechtenstein with 7-0 and against San Marino twice in 2007. It was their first time in history as an independent nation to participate in the FIFA World Cup finishing in round 16.
