This team was in the second round of the World cup four times, namely in 1986, 1998, 2002 and in 2010. In 2010, they even made their first appearance in the quarterfinals. Their major match victories came in the Copa America, where they succeeded in 1953 and in 1979.

The team won a silver medal in football tournament in 2004 at the Athens Olympic Games and was defeated by 1-0 by Argentina in the finals. The team finished in the fourth place in 2001 under 20 World Cup held in Argentina. The team is known as one of the top three teams of Confederação Sul-Americana de Futebol (CONMEBOL) since the World cup qualifiers in 1998.

Nicknamed as Guaranies, La Albirroja, meaning white and red, this team captain is Denis Caniza. The most caps achieved till date has been that of Carlos Gamarra with 110 appearances. The top scorer with 25 goals has been José Saturnino Cardozo. The records show that this team did not enter in 1934 and in 1938.
