Montpellier is a football team from France which plays in the Ligue 1.

History

Montpellier was founded in 1919, as Stade Olympique Montpellierain. Montpellier was one of the founding clubs of the French first division, playing in the inaugural 1932-33 season.

In 1990, Montpellier won their second ever Coupe de France, while two years later they won the Coupe de la Ligue during a period of success, that also spawned into reaching both the Coupe de France and Coupe de la Ligue finals in 2014, but losing both.

Montpellier enjoyed a remarkable breakthrough Ligue 1 title in 2011-12, winning by three points from PSG. Rene Girard was their manager, with Olivier Giroud finishing as the Ligue 1 top scorer with 21 goals, starting off his career of success. Younes Belhanda was also excellent in attack alongside Giroud.

The club was incarnated through merger in 1974. The Nicollin family are long-term owners of the club. In 1989, the club changed its name to its current Montpellier Herault Sport Club.
