FC Rostov is a Russian football club based in Rostov-on-Don in the south of Russia. They feature in the Russia Premier League.
FC Rostov were established in 1930 as Traktor and were rechristened as Torpedo in 1953. They started playing in the championship of RSFSR in South zone of Azov-Don group in 1950 and played in Class B of the Soviet First League in 1953. They played in Class B from 1958 when they placed first out of 16 teams in the zone.
In 1958 they assumed the name Rostselmash and took up their current name in 2003. In those intervening years they struggled to gain promotion to the top flight but eventually made their debut in the first league in 1986 and five years later in 1991 finished as high as fourth in the table.
But in 2007 they suffered relegation from the top flight but in 2008 gained promotion to the Premier League after winning the Russian First League.
FC Rostov finished sixth in the Premier Division in 1998 and reached the final of the Russian Cup in 2003.

When the Russian championships commenced in 1992, the club was included in Group B but in 1993 got relegated from the top division. But they bounced back pretty soon and went onto established themselves as a decent side in the Russian Premier League.
FC Rostov play their home matches at the Olimp-2 stadium that can hold 12,436 spectators. They bear the nicknames RSM(RostSelMash) and Selmashi.
