Deportivo Universidad Catolica is an extremely popular football team that plays in the Chilean Primera Division. The team was formed in 1937 in Santiago, Chile, by students. The team normally got together only to play against their rivals Universidad de Chile however they decided to convert their small team into a professional unit. The rivalry between the two teams continues till date and the academic and athletic competitions between the two arouse an exceptional atmosphere at the stadium.

The club has attracted fans from a higher stratum of society mainly due to their location in the city. The club is said to possess the best infrastructure in the country as well as the “better than the rest” training facilities. The club has regularly produced fine young people who have done well at the club as well as international level.

Universidad Catolica have won the Primera Division 9 times and the Copa Chile four times in their stints at the levels. In 1956 and then again in 1975, they won the Segunda Division while the Liguilla Pre Libertardores tournament of Chile saw them win in 8 times in 13 years. At the international level, the team has reached the finals of the Copa Libertadores in 1993 although they ended up as the losing side against Sao Paulo from Brazil. The very next year, they qualified and won the Copa Interamericana, to reinstall their status as a top club.
