MTK Hungaria FC is a Hungarian football club based in Budapest. They currently feature in the Hungarian first division and are the reigning champions. MTK are one of the most successful Hungarian clubs, having won the Hungarian League a staggering 23 times and the Hungarian Cup 12 times.
MTK Hungaria FC were established on November 16,1888 in a Budapest café as Circle of Hungarian Physical Activists. The football section was added to the club only on March 12, 1901 and the first public football match that MTK played were against BTC.
MTK started life in the second league in Hungary in 1902 and were promoted to the first league in 1902. They finished third that year and won the league championship in 1904.
In 1955 they became the first ever Hungarian club to feature in the European Cup. They also finished runners-up in the European Cup Winners’ Cup in 1964.
MTK continued to win Hungarian League titles in Hungary and also made several appearances in European club competitions. They became a force in Hungary in the 1980s and 1990s and are now firmly established as one of the giants of Hungarian football.

However MTK remained an amateur club as professional football was yet to be introduced in Hungary. In 1949 Hungary became a communist state and the club were taken over the secret police, the AVH and were renamed as Textiles SE. The club then underwent several name changes and eventually became the same old MTK. In the 1950s MTK won three Hungarian League titls, a Hungarian Cup and a Mitropa Cup.
MTK Hungaria play their home matches at the Stadion Hidegkuti Nandor that can host 12,700 spectators.
