Gremio Esportivo Brasil is a football club based out of the city of Pelotas, in the Rio Grande do Sul state in Brazil. The team is also known as Brasil de Pelotas. Established in 1911, Gremio Esportivo Brasil was founded after the board of directors had a difference of opinion with the players at the Sport Club Cruzeiro do Sul. On Brazil’s Independence day anniversary, Jose Moeira de Brito’s residence was alive with the birth of a new club, Gremio Esportivo Brasil. The club started with the Brazilian colours of Yellow and Green but soon shifted to Red and Black as their rival club, Esporte Club Pelotas had the same combination.
The club has been up the ladder of football in the country on more than a few occasions. Its best opportunity came in 1985 when they reached the semi-finals of the league after beating the likes of Flamengo. However, Gremio Esportivo Brasil fell to Bangu, from Rio de Janeiro. The crowd support at the team’s 18,000 capacity stadium has been so tremendous that the team has been invited to play at the top flight mainly because of the maddening nature of the fans who support the team. Despite a fantastic crowd support, the players have tended to be less emphatic on the pitch and have, after a few long years, finally managed to get back into the drivers’ seat with a title in 2004.
