Siboniso Gaxa is a soccer defender who plays for the South African Football National Team. At present, he plays for the Mamelodi Sundowns and South Africa team. Hailing from KwaMashu in Durban, Siboniso Pa Gaxa stands five feet ten inches tall. This Right Back Defender’s former team includes Induna Lotz.
The University of Port Elizabeth, from where he graduated had a football team which was entirely controlled by F.C. Copenhagen, a Danish side team. But, he was not included in the total three player’s team, which included Bongumusa Mthethwa, Lee Langeveldt and Elrio van Heerden. All these three players made it successfully from the FCK-UPE Academy to the F.C. Copenhagen. Later on, in 2002, he shifted to Supersport United, where he stayed for around six seasons making 131 appearances and four goals, prior to joining Mamelodi Sundowns in 2008 where he made 45 appearances and one goal.
With right to International career, Gaxa made his debut in the FIFA World Cup in 2006 against Cape Verde. He was also a part of the South African squad at the CONCACAF Gold Cup in 2005, African Cup of Nations in 2006 and FIFA Confederations Cup in 2009 respectively.
Subsequently, he signed with United’s rival team, Mamelodi Sundowns, based in Pretoria. Other than that, Gaxa was also part of the South African U-20 squad at the CAF African Youth Championships in 2003 in Burkina Fasco. He also represented U-17 South Africa team and the senior level.
Career Highlights
His talent got noticed at an early age, which matured with time. Hardworking, resilient and versatile, Gaxa’s performances with the SuperSport United became a key factor in the 2007-08 South African PSL title success, which was a first time for the club.
At the PSL Awards, Gaxa won the Absa-lutely Awesome Goal of the Absa Premiership Award in May 2008 for the 2007/8 season.
