Lee Bowyer
Lee David Bowyer is an English football player currently featuring for the English Premier League club West Ham United. He plays as a midfielder and reached great heights with Leeds United early on in his career.
Lee Bowyer made his professional club football start for London club Charlton Athletic in 1993 and impressed heavily at the valley. He played for Charlton for three seasons and scored 8 goals in 46 league matches.
In 1996 the then Leeds United manager Howard Wilkinson signed the promising young central midfielder for 2.8 million pounds, a then British transfer record for a teenager. After initially playing off the bench, Bowyer was drafted into the first team at Leeds and then became a cult hero for the Leeds unit. He was instrumental for his side in the 1999-2000 when Leeds United reached the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup and in the 2000-2001 season when they reached the semis fof the UEFA Champions Leaugue, Bowyer was voted the Leeds player of the year by the club’s supporters in th 1998-1999 season and the 2000-2001 season.
Lee Bowyer played his best football during those days with Leeds United and even an ugly incident in January 2000 in which he and his then Leeds team mate Jonathan Woodgate was supposed to have inflicted severe injuries on an Asian student, couldn’t blemish his playing stint at Eland Road.
Lee Bowyer was signed by West Ham United in 2003 for a short time and after the Hammers were relegated from the Premier League at the end of the 2002-2003 season, Bowyer was signed by Newcastle United in July 2003 on a free transfer. Bowyer played well for the Geordies but he could never really revive his glory days with Leeds United. He scored 6 goals in 79 Premier League matches between 2003 and 2006 for Newcastle and in 2006 was signed by Newcastle United.
Lee Bowyer is pretty much a regular at Upron Park these days although no one really expects him to be the player he was seven or eight years ago.
Lee Bowyer’s only international appearance for England was against Portugal in an international friendly in September 2002.
