Cristian Romero

Cristian Romero is an Argentine professional footballer who plays as a centre-back for Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur, which he captains, and the Argentina National Team.

Cristian Gabriel Romero was born on April 27, 1998, in Córdoba, Argentina. The Argentine defender stands 185 cm (6 ft 1 in) tall.

Often referred to by his nickname "Cuti," he emerged from the youth system of his hometown club Belgrano before making the leap to European football.

Career

Romero began his senior career with Belgrano in 2016. He moved to Serie A in 2018, initially joining Genoa. His performances drew the attention of Juventus, who purchased him the following season, though he continued his development on loan at Genoa and then Atalanta.

His time at Atalanta was particularly successful. He was named the Serie A Best Defender for the 2020–21 season.

Atalanta exercised their option to buy him before immediately loaning him to Tottenham Hotspur. After a successful loan spell, he signed permanently with the North London club in 2022. He was eventually named team captain and led the squad to a major European trophy, winning the 2024–25 UEFA Europa League, where he was named the Player of the Season.

Internationally, Romero has been a cornerstone of a golden era for the Argentina national team. After making his senior debut in 2021, he became a key starter, helping his country win the 2021 Copa América, the 2022 Finalissima, and the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

He continued his success by winning the 2024 Copa América.
