Erik Olof Mellberg is a Swedish footballer who features for the Italian and European powerhouse Juventus. He is a versatile defender who can play at centre-back or right back. He is also a Swedish international player and used to be the captain of the national side until the end of the 2006 Germany World Cup.
Olof Mellberg commenced his professional career for Swedish side Gullspång and after arching through Spain at Racing Sanrander, he moved to the English Premiership in 2001 to Aston Villa and it was at Villa Park that Mellberg grew in stature and reputation.
Mellberg featured in 232 matches for Aston Villa until he departed from the Midlands club in the summer of 2008 when his contract ran out He was signed by Italian giants Juventus on a free transfer on a three-year contract.
Mellberg has played almost 80 matches for Sweden and featured for his nation at Euro 2000, 2002 World Cup, Euro 2004 and 2006 World Cup. He was voted best Swedish player in 2003. Mellberg was the first player to score in a competitive match at Arsenal's Emirates Stadium.
