Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson says Sunday’s seesawing Mancunian derby against rivals Manchester City was a brilliant advertisement for the English Premier League.

United edged the derby 3-2, thanks to Robin van Persie’s dramatic deflected stoppage-time free-kick, after the Sky Blues had fought back from 2-0 down.

“It was such a good game - a special one,” Ferguson said. “It was engrossing. It tells you about the quality of the Premier League, it’s such a great league.”

At 2-0 up, United had an Ashley Young ruled out for offside, while they also had a good penalty shout on Patrice Evra turned down. Ferguson said they would have been disappointed not to have won.

“We would have been disappointed not to have won because we had played ever so well,” he said.

“[City] hadn’t lost at home for a couple of years and both of us are contending at the top of the league.

“There was a great team spirit and they were determined to win the match.”
