Wenger Cool Despite Blowing Two-Goal Lead

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has remained bullish about his side’s chances of progressing into the UEFA Champions League knockout stage despite blowing a two-goal lead in Tuesday’s 2-2 draw with Schalke.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has remained bullish about his side’s chances of progressing into the UEFA Champions League knockout stage despite blowing a two-goal lead in Tuesday’s 2-2 draw with Schalke.

The Gunners, who were beaten 2-0 at home by Schalke last month, appeared to have reversed their fortunes when they led by two goals in the first half after strikes from Theo Walcott and Olivier Giroud.

However, Klaas-Jan Huntelaar pulled one back before the break and Jefferson Farfan would equalise on 56 minutes.

The result keeps Schalke to of the group, one point ahead of the Gunners, while Olympiakos are a further point back after defeating Montpellier 3-1 in Greece.

“It doesn’t matter too much [about Olympiacos FC’s victory]. What is important is that we win the next game against Montpellier and see what happens,” Wenger insisted.

“It may or may not go to the last game. Football is about performances in every match.”

He added: “At 2-0 you have not won the game. They have a lot of physical and technical quality and they never give up, so overall I never felt that the game was over.”

The Gunners boss also had plenty of praise for Walcott’s performance in the draw.

“Walcott did very well today and was one of our best players. People forget he was injured and has just come back. We know that he is a great player,” he said.
