England manager Roy Hodgson is expected to make a number of changes to his side for Tuesday’s important away 2014 World Cup qualifier against Poland.

Steven Gerrard is expected to take Tom Cleverley’s place in midfield, while Jermaine Defoe and Danny Welbeck will battle for the role as the lone striker to be supported by Wayne Rooney.

Welbeck scored a double in England’s 5-0 win over San Marino on Friday, along with Rooney who Hodgson said was in top form.

“At the moment I am seeing the best of Wayne Rooney,” Hodgson said.

“Maybe in the earlier games he could play for me he wasn’t at that level.

“Now I have to hope now he stays at his best and that he stays fit and healthy and continues to do what he is doing for Manchester United at the moment, which means he’ll do it for us as well.”
