Rooney developed at the youth academy of Liverpool-based club Everton and made his debut for the first team on August 17, 2002 in a 2-2 draw against Tottenham Hotspur at Goodison Park.

His first goals for the first team came on October 2 when he scored twice against Wrexham in the League Cup and later that month found the target in the final minutes against Arsenal in the Premier League to end the Gunners’ 30-match unbeaten run.

Rooney continued to go from strength to strength after that and it was soon clear that he was outgrowing Everton. Manchester United came calling in the summer of 2004 and signed him for £25.6 million, making the Englishman the most expensive teenager at the time. He left Everton having scored 15 goals in 67 league matches.

Rooney continued to show his class and calibre at Old Trafford and proved his world-class skills under manager Sir Alex Ferguson. From the beginning Rooney became a key asset for the United and over the years cemented his name as one of the best ever players to put on the famous red shirt.

During his time Rooney has won the Premier League five times (2007, 2008, 2009, 2011 and 2013), the League Cup on two occasions (2006, 2010) and the Champions League in 2008. He also helped the Red Devils reach the final of Europe’s most prestigious club competition on two other occasions – 2009 and 2011.

Over the years Rooney has won numerous individual accolades, including the FAW Footballer of the Year in 2009-10and Barclays Player of the Year in 2009-10.

Rooney made his international debut for England in a friendly international against Australia on February 12, 2003 when he just 17 years of age, becoming the youngest player ever to feature for the Three Lions at the time.

He was star for the European giants at Euro 2004 and helped them reach the quarter-finals. Since then, though, Rooney has struggled to achieve success at international level but has scored a laudable 38 goals in 86 matches for his country.
