Karagounis Revels In Greek Glory

Greece’s captain and man-of-the-match Giorgos Karagounis says his side displayed “heart and soul” in their 1-0 victory over Russia which booked the 2004 European champions their place in the knockout stage.

Greece’s captain and man-of-the-match Giorgos Karagounis says his side displayed “heart and soul” in their 1-0 victory over Russia which booked the 2004 European champions their place in the knockout stage.

Karagounis scored the game’s only goal with a brilliantly-taken strike on the stroke of half-time, while Alan Dzagoev came close to levelling in the second-half as the Russians crashed out on head-to-head record, despite having superior goal difference to Greece.

The result continues Greece’s dream run at the Euros, having lifted the trophy in 2004, with Karagounis a part of that squad.

“We played with heart and soul which are the characteristics of this team,” Karagounis said.

“We displayed those qualities throughout, showing our character. We were only playing for one result and we got it.

“The supporters were splendid and we managed to get a result which will bring joy to Greeks around the world.

“Sometimes it’s not just about qualifying but about the performance, and that was all important for us.”

He added: “We didn’t have to prove anything to the people. We have achieved results in our history that other nations probably wouldn’t have. We knew that we would play against a strong opponent but we showed our character and our qualities.

“I can compare this qualification for the quarter-final with the glory in Portugal eight years ago. I hope that the Greeks have smiles on their faces tonight.”
