Manchester United star defender Rio Ferdinand has signed a new 5-year deal with the club that shall keep him at Old Trafford until the summer of 2013.

The current contract of Rio Ferdinand was due to expire this summer but the England international was never touted to leave the club. He is firmly an established central defender for Man United and what’s more, he is even being tipped to get the captain’s armband next season.

Man United manager Sir Alex Ferguson was obviously immensely pleased that Rio shall stay stay at Old Trafford for five more years (at least) and told the club’s official website:

“I am delighted Rio has signed a new contract.

“Rio’s contribution this season has been a major factor in our outstanding defensive performance.”

Rio Ferdinand is recognized as one of the best defenders in the world and his partnership with Nemanja Vidic at the heart of the Man United defence has certainly aided United in shoring up their backline and shipping in very few goals this season.
