Christopher Nkunku has suffered a knee injury in training that has led to France ruling him out of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

France confirmed the news late on Tuesday evening about the RB Leipzig forward, who has been heavily linked with a January move to Chelsea.

“Injured in training, Christopher Nkunku drops out of the World Cup. The whole group shares Christopher’s sadness and wishes him a speedy recovery,” the French Team’s official account said.

Nkunku suffered a sprain in his left knee, ruling him out of the event which begins on Sunday and runs until December 18.

The 25-year-old had undergone radiological examinations on Tuesday evening but the bad news was confirmed.

The reigning world champions will confirm a replacement for Nkunku once the medical file has been validated by Fifa.

It was anticipated Nkunku would have been backup behind Karim Benzema and Kylian Mbappe in Les Bleus’ lineup.

France have already added Borussia Moenchengladbach’s forward Marcus Thuram and Monaco defender Axel Disasi, with PSG defender Presnel Kimpembe ruled out on Monday due to a hamstring injury.

Les Bleus open their World Cup campaign against Australia on Tuesday November 22. France are also grouped with Tunisia and Denmark.
