Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp wouldn’t be drawn on the penalty decision which went against his side in Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Manchester City but he still had plenty to say about the offside rule and the Premier League’s scheduling in a stunning rant.

Manchester City and Liverpool drew 1-1 on Sunday, meaning the Reds slip from top spot, with Leicester City rising to the summit courtesy of their 1-0 win over Wolverhampton earlier in the day.

The Reds had taken the lead at Etihad Stadium when Mohamed Salah scored a 13th minute penalty, but City levelled via Gabriel Jesus on 31 minutes, before Kevin De Bruyne missed a 42nd minute penalty.

The spotkick was awarded for a handball from Joe Gomez via the video assistant referee (VAR) when he had minimal time to react to a cross. It was a similar decision to that given against Wolves’ Max Kilman in their clash with Leicester.

“I cannot speak about it because I didn’t see it yet,” Klopp said. “I don’t think its now too important but everybody is talking about it.

“It looked and it sounds to me that its obviously not 100 per cent clear in that moment but I cant say anything about it because I didn’t see it back.”

Instead, the German took aim at the offside rule, referencing Patrick Bamford’s goal for Leeds which was disallowed by the VAR due to his outstretched arm, pointing for the ball to be played in front of him, being deemed offside.

“I can’t say anything about this specific handball situation but I saw yesterday the Bamford armpit and it reminded me a lot of the Bobby Firmino armpit at Aston Villa (last season),” Klopp said.

“I can’t wait for the first time a player scores a goal with the armpit I don’t know how that works but I can’t wait.”

Klopp continued on, slamming the Premier League fixtures this season for the clubs competing in Europe, given the compressed nature of the 2020-21 season after the delay to conclude the 2019-20 campaign after the COVID-19 pause.

“We played after the last international break at 12:30 at Everton,” he said. “My players were Wednesday night, some of them, at Peru. Then you play at 12:30. These kind of things should not happen.

“I understand 100 per cent the need of television, 100 per cent. But the Premier League needs to fulfil more the position of the unity of the players as well. Everything changed apart from the fixture list.”

Meanwhile, Tottenham went temporarily top with a last-gasp 1-0 win at West Bromwich thanks to Harry Kane’s 88th minute header, while Aston Villa thrashed Arsenal 3-0 in London.
