Jesse Lingard must leave Manchester United.

Eventually, all good things must come to an end. There’s a debate to be had over whether Lingard’s time at Old Trafford has been a good thing, but 24 England caps and 205 appearances must mean something.

Homegrown

All homegrown players get an easier ride when things aren’t going well, and things haven’t been going that well for the 27-year-old for some time. With only two appearances in 12 Premier League games, his 13 minute cameo against Leicester City felt like a farewell.

Jesse Lingard hasn’t started a game since 22 December. At some point, Manchester United are going to demand more.

The transfer rumour linking Jack Grealish with Old Trafford will spell the end for Lingard, even if he’s kept around for one more go.

Bargain

With a contract that expires next season, United are going to want to move now to ensure they get best value for their youth product - even in the depressed market. After playing just 27% of minutes this season, Lingard will surely want the same.

This is a player who has always been seen as someone with potential rather than the finished article. Him and Marcus Rashford burst through at around the same time, which is perhaps why the former has always been considered younger than he is. It’s a running joke on Twitter that Lingard will forever be seen as a ‘youngster’.

Target

He’s also an easy target for the retired, shouty footballers. His interests outside the game are well documented, as is his personal JLingz brand. When you combine that with his poor form, you get a perfect storm and an easy target.

There is interest in him from home and abroad. Newcastle United, AS Roma and Borussia Monchengladbach want to sign the attacker - said a report from the Times.

He must take it with both hands.
