'It's So Intense': Lampard Hails Vital 3 Points in Top 4 Race

Chelsea manager Frank Lampard admits his side could’ve played better in Tuesday’s 1-0 win over relegated Norwich City but was simply happy to take all three points as the race for top four intensifies.

Olivier Giroud scored the game’s only goal right before half-time as Chelsea firmed up their grip on third spot with two games to play, moving four points clear of Leicester City and Manchester United in fourth and fifth respectively who both have a game in hand.

The Blues’ final two Premier League fixtures are difficult, at home to champions Liverpool and away to sixth-placed Wolverhampton, so Lampard was simply relieved to take all three points.

“Ideally when you get the first goal you go and score one or two more,” he said.

“When you look at the games that are going on, with Manchester United and Leicester, it’s so intense at the minute and were at the business end, so I think you take your three points.

‘“We didn’t give them any real chances in the game, but there was lots about our game that I’d like to be a bit better.

“We could be quicker with the ball, we could have more rotation, we could cause them more problems, but we defended well enough and we get our three points.”

France international Giroud was set up by emerging 21-year-old midfielder Christian Pulisic for the goal, with Lampard delighted with their combination play.

“We clearly saw that with the goal and I was delighted with Christians movement to run behind on the little angle, because that’s what we weren’t doing in the early stages of the game, and then Oli will always be alive in the box to those sort of balls,” Lampard said.

“If you’re playing Olivier Giroud you want to get balls in the box. You need to play to his strengths and he gets a really good goal.

“The link-up is good, but generally it could have been better. A lot of balls went astray for us today when normally were a bit slicker with the passing, but job done.”
