Newcastle United should extend Andy Carroll’s stay on Tyneside.

The second coming of the Geordie giant hasn’t exactly worked out the way it was planned as his big great glass ankles continue to shatter at the slightest breeze.

So Much Promise

After the tantalising start to Andy Carroll’s career, his body has decided it’s going fight back against the battering ram role it was given and has systematically let the forward down again and again and again.

Moves to West Ham and Liverpool largely failed and now the Tynesider finds himself back where it all began: St. James’ Park.

Homecoming

He’s yet to score a goal and has only played 14 times and started just three times, but that doesn’t mean his influence has been negligible.

For a start, there are his four assists - all which proved to be important. One came in the 1-0 win over Sheffield United, one for the 2-1 victory against Southampton, another when the Toon beat Crystal Palace 1-0.

Those are vital points.

Not Much Competition

There also the matter of squad depth to consider. Newcastle United have Brazilian forward Joelinton in the squad, but he’s not an out and out striker. Even head coach Steve Bruce has admitted as much.

Carroll is needed for vital cover. Despite his lack of goals, he also possesses sharp instincts around the box and can help teach the young South American what sorts of runs to make when and where.

They are both physical players, and having the experience of Carroll in the squad is a major asset.

Low Cost

Finally, the Big AC is on a low wage that’s heavily incentivised towards appearances. That means if he breaks down injured again, there’s very little risk to the finances of the club.

This is a senior player who is good around the squad, provides vital cover, can perform a mentorship role and won’t cost the club much money. How could you not extend his stay?
