Dortmund kept up the pressure on leaders Bayern Munich in the German Bundesliga title hunt, restoring the seven-point gap with five games to play, with the emphatic victory over bottom club Paderborn, although it didnât come easy with scores locked 0-0 at the break.
Thorgan Hazard broke the deadlock in the 54th minute before Jadon Sancho netted the first of his three goals in the 57th minute.
Uwe Hunemeier gave the hosts hope with a 72nd minute penalty but Sancho added another assisted by Hazard.
Further goals from Ashraf Hakimi, Marcel Schmelzer and Sancho sealed the win, which Favre felt confident of at half-time.
'âI only said one sentence during the half-time break: âWe need to keep doing what weâre doingâ,â Favre said.
âWe pressed well, we tired out our opponents, and it was clear that they wouldnât be able to keep up the tempo all the way to the final whistle.
âWe wanted to make sure they couldnât hit us on the counter, as they have a lot of pace up top.
âWe were able to maintain the intensity we showed in the first half and the only real change we made was some alterations to our wide playersâ movements.
âWhen all was said and done the score was 6-1.â
Favre reserved special praise for 32-year-old left-back Schmelzer who scored one and set up another in the triumph.
âMarcel Schmelzer is good in training and out on the pitch in matches too,â Favre said.
âHe played brilliantly and the goal and the assist were well deserved. Perfect.â
Elsewhere, Borussia Moenchengladbach won 4-1 at home to Union Berlin to firm up their grip on third spot, moving ahead of Bayer Leverkusen on goal difference.
Leipzig, who have dropped from third to fifth this weekend, are away to 11th placed FC Koln on Monday.
