Borussia Dortmund boss Lucien Favre had one simple sentence for his side at half-time before they fired six second-half goals to beat Paderborn 6-1 on Sunday.

Dortmund kept up the pressure on leaders Bayern Munich in the German Bundesliga title hunt, restoring the seven-point gap with five games to play, with the emphatic victory over bottom club Paderborn, although it didn’t come easy with scores locked 0-0 at the break.

Thorgan Hazard broke the deadlock in the 54th minute before Jadon Sancho netted the first of his three goals in the 57th minute.

Uwe Hunemeier gave the hosts hope with a 72nd minute penalty but Sancho added another assisted by Hazard.

Further goals from Ashraf Hakimi, Marcel Schmelzer and Sancho sealed the win, which Favre felt confident of at half-time.

'’I only said one sentence during the half-time break: ‘We need to keep doing what we’re doing’,” Favre said.

“We pressed well, we tired out our opponents, and it was clear that they wouldn’t be able to keep up the tempo all the way to the final whistle.

“We wanted to make sure they couldn’t hit us on the counter, as they have a lot of pace up top.

“We were able to maintain the intensity we showed in the first half and the only real change we made was some alterations to our wide players’ movements.

“When all was said and done the score was 6-1.”

Favre reserved special praise for 32-year-old left-back Schmelzer who scored one and set up another in the triumph.

“Marcel Schmelzer is good in training and out on the pitch in matches too,” Favre said.

“He played brilliantly and the goal and the assist were well deserved. Perfect.”

Elsewhere, Borussia Moenchengladbach won 4-1 at home to Union Berlin to firm up their grip on third spot, moving ahead of Bayer Leverkusen on goal difference.

Leipzig, who have dropped from third to fifth this weekend, are away to 11th placed FC Koln on Monday.
