Wellington Phoenix defender Steven Taylor has said he wants to extend his current deal, which expires at the end of the season.

Taylor has been named captain and is a stalwart of Ufuk Talay’s side. The former Premier League man is enjoying life in Wellington and is keen to continue his stay in New Zealand.

“Its up to the club to offer me a contract for me to stay here, said the 33-year-old. “I’m enjoying my football, so yeah, lets see where that gets me.”

It would definitely seem to be in the Nix’s best interests to offer Steven Taylor an extension on his current contract. Hes barely missed a game since joining last season and is a colossal unit at the back. His experience is invaluable to this young side, and the Englishman wants to be able to contribute for as long as possible.

Loves the Nix

“I love this place, its fantastic for me. I’ve loved my football here,” continued Taylor. “I’m enjoying myself every day, coming in and working with the manager has been good and hopefully I could stay for many more years.”

The central defender has played every minute of the season and understandably wants to see a resolution to his contract impasse as soon as possible. The Phoenix have a number of players coming to the end of their deals in 2020 an issue the Nix need to resolve as soon as possible.

“You want to get things all tied up,” said Taylor. “Last year a lot of players were waiting until the playoffs and its not nice when people are unsure.”

Talay has spoken before about his desire to build something at the Phoenix and that should including extending the contracts of their best players. Taylor is one of them, hes keen to stay in Wellington until the end of his career and he brings vital experience to the side. This is a no brainer.
