He competed in the FIA Formula 3 Championship for the first time in 2020, finishing fifth. He was ninth in the 2021 FIA Formula 2 Championship and then third in 2022.

This led to his Formula One opportunity, elevated to Red Bull reserve driver in 2022, before getting an opportunity midway through the 2023 F1 season with AlphaTauri after a wrist injury to Daniel Ricciardo who had replaced Nyck de Vries.

Lawson claimed two points with a ninth-place finish in his third F1 race, the Singapore Grand Prix in September 2023.
