Jimmy Johnson
Jimmy Johnson is one of the most accomplished athletes of his time. He is a seven-time NASCAR Cup Series champion, and he is also the only race car driver in history to be awarded the Associated Press Male Athlete of the Year. His successes in the sport have caused many analysts and race car drivers to consider him as one of the greatest NASCAR drivers in history.
Early career
Johnson’s first foray into racing was on motorcycles when he was only 4 years old. Three years later, at the age of 7, he won the 60cc class championship while having an injured knee. He won more awards when he moved to the Mickey Thompson Entertainment Group Stadium Racing Series. During his early years, Johnson preferred to race off-road. He competed in SODA, SCORE, and MTEG series and accumulated more than 25 wins, finished top three a hundred times, won six championships, and received the Rookie of the Year award in all three leagues.
ASA and Busch Series
In 1997, Jimmy moved from off-road to asphalt oval racing, competing in the American Speed Association. He won the ASA Pat Schauer Memorial Rookie award in 1998 and 1999 was able to have two wins.
NASCAR Cup Series
In 2002, Jimmy became the third rookie to earn his first career pole position in the Daytona 500. While in this series, he had a record of 686 races over 20 years. He finished first (his best finish and his record championship streak) from 2006-2010, then again in 2013 and 2016. His first race was the 2001 UAW-GM Quality 500 and his last race was in the 2020 Season Finale 500. His total wins are at 83, with 374 podiums, and 36 poles.
Other NASCAR series Jimmy was on include the NASCAR Xfinity Series for 13 years and the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series for 1 year.
