Robert Byron was only a part of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series for three seasons but in those three seasons, he did enough to get noticed by the world. He won the first ever NASCAR - sanctioned race in 1948 and was also the first NASCAR Cup Series Champion in 1949. He won the race at Daytona on a 4.15 mile circuit that ran over a beach and road course and was 40 laps long.

In 1966, 'Red', as he was called, was inducted into the National Motorsports Press Association's Hall of Fame at the Darlington Raceway.
