Robert Byron was only a part of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series for three seasons but in those three seasons, he did enough to get noticed by the world. He won the first ever NASCAR - sanctioned race in 1948 and was also the first NASCAR Cup Series Champion in 1949. He won the race at Daytona on a 4.15 mile circuit that ran over a beach and road course and was 40 laps long.
In 1966, ‘Red’, as he was called, was inducted into the National Motorsports Press Association’s Hall of Fame at theDarlington Raceway.
