Ryan Malone is an American left winger on the Tampa Bay Lightning. His father, Greg, played for the Pittsburgh Penguins and Malone grew up in the Pittsburgh area.
Malone was drafted in the 4th round of the 1999 draft by the Pens and debuted in the 2003-04 season. He finished third on the team in scoring that year, but has seen his role change somewhat in the past few seasons. With the addition of high-scoring superstars like Evgeny Malkin, Sidney Crosby and Marian Hossa, Malone has become more of a physical presence for the Penguins. He has made a living for himself taking a beating in front of the net, much like John Leclair did with the Philadelphia Flyers. At 6-4 and 224 lbs, Malone is a force that opposing defensemen must be aware of, because he has the hands and scoring touch to go along with his size. Malone signed with Tampa Bay in the 2008 offseason. Despite the Lightning's struggles, Malone has continued to put up solid offensive numbers , and is on pace to eclipse his goal total of 27 from last season.
