Dion Phaneuf is a Canadian defenseman on the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Phaneuf was drafted in the 1st round, 9th overall in 2003 by Calgary. Since his debut in 2005, Phaneuf has made a name as one of the best defenseman in the NHL. His heavy hitting and hard shot have made him feared at both ends of the rink. He continued to improve his point production for the next three seasons, finishing 2007-08 with 17 goals and 60 points. His production took a hit in 2008-09, as he scored only 11 goals and 47 points, and the following year, he was traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs. The Leafs were one of the worst teams in the league at the time, and Phaneuf will be looked to help rebuild the club. He has already been named team captain for the start of the 2010-11 season.
Phaneuf played for Team Canada at the 2004 and 2005 World Junior Championships, winning silver and then gold. He also won a gold medal at the 2007 World Championships.
