Sauce Gardner is an active American professional football cornerback in the National Football League (NFL). He won the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year award and became the first rookie cornerback since Ronnie Lott to be named a First-team All-Pro.

Player Profile, High School, and College Career

Ahmad Gardner was born on August 31, 2000, in Detroit, Michigan, United States. The Cornerback stands 191 cm tall, and his weight was last listed at 86 kg.

He attended Martin Luther King Jr. Senior High School in Detroit, where he played both wide receiver and cornerback, earning an All-State selection. A three-star recruit, Gardner committed to the University of Cincinnati, where he became an absolute force for the Bearcats defense from 2019 to 2021. He never allowed a single receiving touchdown in his entire collegiate career.

In 2021, he was named a Consensus All-American and the AAC Defensive Player of the Year, helping Cincinnati become the first Group of Five team to reach the College Football Playoff.

Personal Life

Gardner received his famous nickname "Sauce" (originally "A1 Sauce Sweet Feet Gardner") from a youth football coach when he was just six years old due to his agility and playmaking ability.

In 2022, he capitalized on the moniker by partnering with Buffalo Wild Wings to launch a signature barbecue sauce named "Sauce Sauce."

Off the field, Gardner is known for his signature diamond "Sauce" chain and is openly vocal about his Christian faith.

Professional Career

Gardner declared for the 2022 NFL Draft and was selected by the New York Jets in the first round with the fourth overall pick, becoming the highest-drafted cornerback in franchise history.

His rookie season in 2022 was nothing short of spectacular. He started all 17 games, leading the NFL with 20 passes defensed, and immediately cemented himself as a lockdown defender. He was named to the Pro Bowl and earned First-team All-Pro honors, capping off the season by winning the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year award.

Gardner continued his dominance into 2023, once again earning Pro Bowl and First-team All-Pro honors, making him the only cornerback in NFL history to receive First-team All-Pro recognition in each of his first two seasons. He remained a centerpiece of the Jets' elite defense throughout the 2024 season.

In the 2025 offseason, the Jets picked up his fifth-year option and signed him to a massive four-year, $120.4 million contract extension in July. However, in a blockbuster mid-season trade in November 2025, the Jets traded Gardner to the Indianapolis Colts in exchange for wide receiver Adonai Mitchell and two future first-round picks.
