=== History ===

The Monmouthshire County Cricket Club was a cricket team which had previously symbolized the Monmouthshire County in the Minor Counties Championship tournament. This competition was held from 1901 to 1934. Many regarded this county club as the weakest in the Minor Counties contest. This club did finish in the top half of the final table in few seasons in the 1900s. By 1905, the club achieved success and it was considered as their best season when they came second to Norfolk.

There was a new club, the Newport Athletic Club in 1875 that got an opportunity to play at Rodney parade in 1877. They secured the land at Rodney parade for many of their games like tennis, cricket, athletics and rugby. By 1881, the ground hosted a tournament between District XXII and Newport team and All England XI team of WG Grace. By 1892, a member of the popular brewing family, Fred Phillips, created the Monmouthshire County Cricket Association and he persuaded many leading players of Athletic Club to turn out and play for the county.

In 1934-35, the committee of Monmouthshire committee went ahead and merged with Glamorgan. It was agreed that Glamorgan gets to select any of the players of Monmouthshire in return clearing the debts of the Monmouthshire team. It was also decided that the players can play at their worthwhile venues too.

It was post 1934 when Glamorgan, which rose to first class status in 1921, played fairly at grounds. It was within the Monmouthshire borders which included the county ground of Newport, the Rodney Parade. It was in 1935 when this club met with financial difficulties and had to drop out of the Minor County Championship. However, as the Monmouthshire town rose to popularity, there were many cricket teams by 1870s that came around.
