The Singapore national cricket team came to being in the year 1852, but it got its ICC membership not until 1974. The Singapore team played their earlier matches as part of the Straits Settlements cricket team. The period between 1890 and 1987 was spent playing the Interport Matches with the Singapore team playing as Hong Kong.
The team was not successful in winning any of the two matches it played as part of the Straits Settlements team. In 1968, the Interport matches, which were not played regularly, were again played with Singapore recording a draw against Hong Kong.

1970 marked the opening year for the Singapore team playing for the Saudara Cup against Malaysia. The team was successful in taking home the Saudara Cup in 1977. Singapore started playing for the South East Asian Tournament in 1984. 1991 was the year that Singapore started to play for the Tuanku Ja’afar Cup. The team laid their hands on the Cup in 1994.
The Singapore team has competed in the ICC Trophy in 1979, 1990, and then again in 1997 but failed to get past the qualifying round.
In recent years, the Singapore team has participated in the 2000 ACC trophy and the 2001 ICC trophy. Again, it was not successful to route itself beyond the first round. There was no improvement in their performance until 2006. The team participated in the ACC Premier League hosted in 2006 and successfully acquired third position in the overall standings. Captain Chaminda Ruwan of Singapore team scored the highest score of the overall tournament at the 2007 ACC Twenty20 Cup but could not save his team from being eliminated in the second round.
Singapore had a continuous winning streak at the 2009 Division Six of the World Cricket League that earned it a place in the Division Five of the World Cricket League by winning the Division Six.
