In India, the state of Gujarat is represented by three cricket teams – the Gujarat Cricket team, Saurashtra Cricket team and Baroda Cricket team. In the Duleep Trophy, the Gujarat cricket team plays under the North Zone. The team has achieved very little success in the Ranji Trophy and still it is in the Elite Group of this tournament.

History

There are several cricketers that have played for the Gujarat Cricket Team and have further been selected in the India national cricket team. Some of the prominent players in the Gujarat cricket team are Jasu Patel, Parthiv Patel and Nari Contractor.

The final of the Ranji Trophy Plate League in 2008 was played from 5th to 9th January 2008. In the 1st innings, Railways collected 260 runs. Gujarat replied by scoring 280 runs and took a lead of 20 runs. In the 2nd innings, Railways was all out for 169 runs. Gujarat managed 152 runs for the loss of 9 wickets.

The Gujarat Cricket team won its first Ranji Trophy Plate League title in 2007-08 and defeated the Railways in the final.

The Gujarat cricket team reached in the Ranji Trophy final for the first time in the 1950-51 season. This match was played from 17th to 21st March 1951. In the 1st innings, Holkar accumulated 429 runs. Gujarat was all out for 327 and thus, Holkar received a lead of 102 runs. In the 2nd innings, Holkar managed to score 443 runs for the loss of 10 wickets. Gujarat was all out for 356 and lost the match. Holkar was victorious in this match by 189 runs. This match is mainly remembered for a double century by Chandu Sarwate of Holkar as well as a score of 152 by Jasu Patel, the off spinner of Gujarat.

In 2016-17, Gujarat won the Ranji Trophy beating Mumbai in the final.
