Jimmy Maher
A former Australian cricketer, James Patrick Maher was better known as Jimmy Maher to his teammates. He was a left handed batsman and a right armed medium pacer. Before playing for Australia, Maher played domestic cricket with Queensland, Glamorgan and Durham. He has also played Twenty20 matches with the Hyderabad Heroes at the ICL (Indian Cricket League).
In 2001-02, Maher became the first player to have completed 1000 runs at the Pura Cup. In 1997-98, Maher was first selected to represent Australia for one-day matches as the team was short of Mark Waugh and Steve Waugh on account of illness. Despite an unnoticed performance at the series, Maher was again picked up in 2002 after the Waugh brothers were fired from the team. He displayed a steady performance with 95 runs from an innings against South Africa.
The next few years, Maher served as an interim wicket-keeper for the team which also included the 2003 World Cup. Although a few short stints with the team, Maher was never seen as a regular player with Australia. In 2007, he scored 108 runs from 133 balls at the final of the Ford Rangers Cup against Victorian Bushrangers. Maher was awarded Man of the Match for his effort.
Throughout his career, Maher has played 206 first-class matches and 214 List A matches with averages of 38.78 and 39.15 respectively. His bowling averages for the same remain at 50.40 and 28.0 respectively. Maher participated in 26 one-day internationals with batting averages of 25.76.
He is currently playing as a captain for the Queensland domestic cricket team in Australia.
