Taruwar Kohli is a right arm medium pace bowler and right handed batsman who looks up to Sachin Tendulkar as his idol. Kohli was part of the India Under-19 squad that defeated South Africa in the final to win the 2008 World Cup in Malaysia. In this tournament, he was asked to open the innings despite the fact that he is a No. 3 batsman and not a specialist opening batsman. His response was excellent as he scored 218 runs inclusive of 3 continuous half centuries.

During the 2005-06 Vijay Merchant Trophy competition, he represented the Punjab Under-17 team and in his debut match hammered 85 runs. In the penultimate match of the tournament, he scored a brilliant century and was the top scorer in this game. He played in the Cooch Behar Trophy and Vinoo Mankad Trophy in 2006 as a member of the Under-19 team. As he performed as per expectations in the Punjab team, he was selected in the Under-19 North Zone team.

Rajasthan Royals team of the IPL selected Kohli for the inaugural season in 2008. He debuted in this tournament on 19th April 2008 against Delhi Daredevils in Delhi.
