Niraj Patel is a left handed middle order batsman who was a member of Under-19 team that was selected for the World Cup in 1999. He was also a part of the India A team that contested against Pakistan in 2005.

From 1995 to 1997, Patel took part in the Gujarat Under-16 and Under-19 squads and then progressed to the senior team. In the 1997-98 Ranji Trophy, he debuted impressively scoring 62 runs and due to this performance he got selected in the Indian Under-19 team. In the Ranji One day Internationals, he participated in 4 games and had an average of 103 runs. During the Ranji Trophy Elite Division Group-B match in January 2007, while playing against Maharashtra, he accumulated 112 runs with the help of 18 fours. He accrued more than 600 runs for Gujarat in the Ranji Trophy in the 2007-08 season. As of 2008, Patel has taken part in 61 first class matches and his batting average was more than 40.

Patel performed satisfactorily in the 2008 IPL tournament as a representative of Rajasthan Royals.
