Despite this condition, he took part in 4 matches and took 16 wickets at an average of 24.75.

In one of these, he had a phenomenal spell of 7 for 4 off 7 overs on 2nd December 2004 due to which South Australia was dismissed for just 29 runs at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Bracken was recalled to the Test team in 2005-06.

On 4th December 2003, Bracken made his Test debut for Australia against India replacing the injured Glenn McGrath.

Bracken was not included in the Test team for about 2 years due to the strength of pace bowling in Australia. For the 1st Test of the 2005-06 Frank Worrell Trophy he was recalled in the Australian side to play against West Indies in Brisbane.

After this Test match, Bracken did not play in another Test due to the rising of Mitchell Johnson and Stuart Clark. In February 2008, Bracken revealed that he was eager to play in Tests.
