Naganahira Nagas had the honor of featuring in the curtain raiser of the tournament and they were fortunate enough to come out on top of Ruhuna Royals in the rain-affected match.
Set a revised target to chase, Nagas reached 73 off the final ball of the innings - 12 overs. Angelo Mathews expressed satisfaction at the result, though his team will need to lift up their game.
The batsmen had their going tough while Ajantha Mendis, their key bowler, was taken for runs despite picking up crucial wickets.
The success story though was Shaminda Eranga who returned with three for 15 from his quota of overs and will again look to make a mark.
Amongst the international stars, Ahmad Shahzad fell first ball while Mushfiqur Rahim was not needed. Both will be eager to perform on Monday.
For the Kandurata Warriors, the opening day ended in disappointment as they were ordinary in a rain-shortened game against Basnahira Cricket Dundee.
Their 34-run defeat was a result of poor bowling followed by struggling batting in difficult conditions. While alarms may not ring yet, there will be questions over the composition of the team with several aged players selected.
Only two batsmen reached double figures and Thisara Perera, top scorer with 35, will again be crucial to their success.
With the expectations of better weather, Saeed Ajmal could come in handy with the ball after being rendered largely ineffective due to the wet ball. Sohail Tanvir had three wickets to boast of but his consistency has been a problem.
