Deccan Chargers beat Mumbai again, go to top

The 32nd match of the DLF Indian Premier League saw Deccan Chargers face the Mumbai Indians at Pretoria.

The 32nd match of the DLF Indian Premier League saw Deccan Chargers face the Mumbai Indians at Pretoria.

The Mumbai Indians were chasing a total of 146 and were jolted early with the twin wickets of Sanath Jayasuriya and Sachin Tendulkar, both falling to R.P. Singh off consecutive deliveries. Pinal Shah was promoted to the number three slot, after having a 19 as his highest and he did well to begin.

Even his departure did not affect the Mumbai Indians, because at the crease were Dwayne Bravo and J.P. Duminy. The duo batted sensibly, punishing the loose balls and taking singles off the others. They went into the break at 71/3, and even the post-strategic break period of one or two overs did not allow them to lose their concentration. Man-of-the-Match>

53 were needed off 42, and 49 off 36, when Suman got rid of Bravo to a not-so-intelligent shot. Bravo tried to hoick the bowler down the ground, but only managed to give a tame catch to the long-off fielder. And then there was a procession.

Rohit Sharma bowled Abhishek Nayar around his legs, while the very next ball saw Harbhajan Singh try to smash the bowler over the mid-wicket, only to be castled again. Sharma was on a hat-trick, and though he had to wait for an over, he finally managed to get one by dismissing Duminy for a well-made half century. He became the second player after Yuvraj Singh to capture a hat-trick in this tournament.

The Mumbai team capitulated after that and fell away to 126/8!

Earlier, the Chargers won the toss and elected to bat first, and opened with their usual pair of Adam Gilchrist and Herschelle Gibbs. However, Gibbs had to depart very quickly, as he managed to edge the Dhawal Kulkarni outswinger to Sachin Tendulkar in the slips. Gilchrist batted in an unconventionally slow manner, collecting runs rather than smacking everything that came his way, but Harbhajan Singh’s introduction was greeted by T. Suman with a couple of sixes. Gilli joined in the fun with a massive shot over mid-wicket off the same bowler to propel the score forward to 37/1 in five overs.

Suman departed off the bowling off Dwayne Bravo when he give himself room to cut the ball, but could only manage to edge it the ‘keeper. The Gilchrist-Rohit Sharma partnership added 25 runs, but the momentum never came about and led to Gilchrist’s dismissal off Rohan Raje.

Dwayne Smith has been in a good touch, and the one reason for that is that the captain seems to have given him an open hand on the way he needs to bat. However, in today’s inning, he managed to only hit a six and a four before falling to Sanath Jayasuriya and then was followed by Sharma to leave the Chargers at 118/5 in 17 overs.

Luckily, Venugopal Rao did well to smash a 17-ball 28 in the slog overs and get to 145/6 in their twenty overs. It did feel about 10-15 runs short at that time; but it turns out, it was 19 more!

Rohit Sharma was given the Man-of-the-Match award for his 38 and the four-wicket haul.
