Jerome Taylor of the West Indies will not be representing his franchise for the second season of the Indian Premier League as he met with an accident and is not fit enough to be able to play cricket. Taylor had ended up receiving the injury from a vehicle injury and will be replaced by a greenhorn in Yusuf Abdullah of South Africa. Abdullah has been in good form for over one year now, and was also tipped to make it to one of the teams in the Champions League of cricket. He also made his T20I debut in the recently concluded T20I series against Australia, taking 1/16 in three overs.
Ness Wadia, the co-owner of the Kings XI Punjab team, for whom Taylor was supposed to play, said that it was a conscious decision to pitch for a South African bowler in place of the injured Taylor, as he would be more attuned with the conditions there. He also said, “We will be playing six matches in Durban, which is Abdulla’s home ground and he knows the ground better than anybody.” >
My take on issue: Personally, there was nothing that KXP could do due to Taylor’s injury, but I think the decision to get in Abdullah is a good one. For one, and as has been mentioned above, Abdullah’s know-how of the conditions in his hometown should not only help his own bowling and his team directly, but it could help him pass on some tips to the other bowlers in the team. The bigger advantage that Abdullah gets in for the team is with his accuracy and economical bowling; as his records show.
In the 26 T20s that he has played so far, he has scalped 34 wickets at an average of 16 and an economy rate of only 5.83! In a format, where anything below 8 is considered par for the course, his economy makes for stingy reading.
I do think that Abdullah now should be played in majority of the matches; especially with S. Sreesanth’s absence, and Brett Lee’s return to cricketing arena after on-field and personal issues.
